Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use gstcalculator.com.au, why, and the choices you have. It was last updated on 25 October 2026.

Who we are

The site is a Shmarlo project. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the operator of this site. Contact us through the contact page.

The calculator

Calculations are done in your browser. The amounts you type are not sent to our servers when you use the calculator. Your latest result is kept in your browser’s session storage so it can be attached if you choose to send us a message, and it is cleared when you close the tab or change an input.

The contact form

When you send a message we collect the details you enter: your name, email address, optional phone number, subject and message. We also receive your latest calculation (if you made one), the date and time, your device type, browser and screen size, your IP address, your approximate location (country, and where available city and region), and the page you came from.

We use this information to read and reply to your message, to understand the problem you describe, and to prevent spam and abuse. The message is delivered to us by email. We do not sell it.

Visitor counter

The footer shows how many people are online, how many have visited and how many times the page you are on has been viewed. This uses a random session identifier stored in your browser for the visit. Our server stores a one-way hash of that identifier with a time stamp, not your name or IP address.

Location

When you arrive we ask whether you would like to share your location. This is optional and the calculator works exactly the same if you say no. If you allow it, your browser sends your approximate position (latitude, longitude and how accurate it is) with each calculation. We turn that into a street or suburb name using the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service, which receives the coordinates only, and we store the result in our private log so we can see where our visitors are. We do not use it for anything else and do not sell it. Your choice is remembered on your device: choosing “Not now” means we will not ask again for 30 days, and you can withdraw permission at any time in your browser’s site settings (the padlock next to the address).

Calculator activity

When you press Calculate, the amount, GST rate and calculation type are sent to our server and emailed to the site owner together with the date and time, your device and browser, approximate location and IP address, how long you have been on the site, which pages you viewed, and how you found us (the website, search engine or campaign link you came from). If you use "Calculate & Email Me", we collect your first name and email address to send you your result, and we keep them with that calculation. The marketing box in that form is ticked by default; untick it if you do not want updates, or reply "unsubscribe" to any email to be removed. We save a random device ID and your visit count in your browser so we can tell new visitors from returning ones, and if you use "Calculate & Email Me" your first name and email are also remembered on your device so you can confirm them next time (click "Not you?" to clear them). If you rate the site, your star rating is stored with that calculation. Each calculation is also stored in a private log that only the site owner can access, so we can see how the calculator is used, measure usage and keep it secure.

Advertising

We show ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads and may use your IP address and browsing information for that purpose. You can manage ad personalisation in your Google account settings and at adssettings.google.com.

Other services that see your visit

Our site is delivered through Cloudflare, which processes visitor IP addresses to provide security and performance. Pages load fonts and icons from Google Fonts and cdnjs, so those providers receive your IP address when they serve them. Links to the ATO and other sites are governed by their own privacy policies.

How long we keep information

We keep contact messages only as long as we need them to respond and keep reasonable records, and then delete them.

Your choices and rights

You can ask to see or correct personal information we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, through the contact page. You can block cookies in your browser settings, although some features and ads may not work as expected. If you are not satisfied with how we handle a privacy issue, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Children

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
