Guide
ATO resources and where to get help
The official ATO pages worth bookmarking, plus other places to get free or paid help.
Start with the ATO website
The ATO website at ato.gov.au is the authoritative source for GST rules, forms, due dates and rates. The GST section covers registration, charging GST, tax invoices, claiming credits and reporting. The links collected on this site point straight to the relevant ATO pages.
Online services and your account
Businesses lodge BAS, check balances and update details using ATO online services for business through myGov and the Australian Business Register. Learn to read your ATO account statement because it shows lodgments, payments and any debt.
Talking to the ATO
The ATO has phone lines for businesses and individuals. You can also ask for a private ruling on how a law applies to your specific situation, and the ATO publishes public rulings and guidance for common cases.
Professionals
Registered tax agents and BAS agents are regulated by the Tax Practitioners Board. A registered professional can lodge for you, represent you with the ATO and often gives you longer lodgment due dates. Check the register before you hire.
Free help for small business
The ATO offers small business assistance, including webinars and a helpline, and many community organisations provide free tax help for individuals on low incomes. Search the ATO site for current programs.
Using this site
Our calculator, guides and glossary are general information to help you learn. They are not tax advice and they are not affiliated with the ATO. Always verify against the official ATO pages.
